Our general music curriculum introduces students to the history and evolution of music, exploring styles from Gregorian chant and traditional sacred music to classical, folk, jazz, and contemporary genres. As a Catholic school, special emphasis is placed on the sacred music of the Church, helping students understand the important role music plays in worship, prayer, and the liturgy.
Throughout the year, students learn essential musical concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics, and music notation. They develop their vocal skills by singing in solfège, strengthen their ability to read and interpret music, and have opportunities to compose original pieces while expressing their own creativity. Students also perform on a variety of classroom instruments and participate in ensemble activities that build teamwork, confidence, and musicianship.
One of the highlights of the school year is our annual Christmas Concert, where students share their musical talents with family and friends while celebrating the true meaning of the Christmas season. Through both sacred and seasonal selections, students have the opportunity to perform in a joyful celebration of Christ's birth, creating cherished memories and strengthening our school community. Throughout the year, students may also participate in school liturgies and other performances that allow them to use their musical gifts in service to the Church and the school.
In addition to developing performance skills, students explore the cultural and historical significance of music from around the world. By learning how music has shaped different cultures and traditions, they gain a deeper appreciation for its role in history, worship, and everyday life.
At St. Ignatius, we believe music is a gift from God that enriches both the mind and the spirit. Our Music Program inspires students to develop their talents, grow in confidence, and cultivate a lifelong love and appreciation for music while using their gifts to praise God and serve others.
